Spanish pop music began to flourish at the end of Francisco Franco's regime, but really took off during the "ye yé" movement of the mid 1960s. This musical style of uptempo pop was taken from the American pop refrain "yeah yeah," coined by the French and reflected in such music from Spain as "La Chica Ye-Yé." Deep passion and flamenco rhythms, however, made the sound uniquely Spanish. From this first generation of Spanish pop singers and Spanish music, Rosalia's 1965 hit "Flamenco" sounded most distinctively Spanish.
