Go-Go rap originated in the
Washington D.C, area. While many refer to this genre of music as go-go
rap, go-go music is a more appropriate term because most of these songs
are more instrumentally oriented than they are lyrically. Some speculate
that this type of music has remained more in the niche market for this
very reason.
With go-go rap songs being more lyrically sparse than other
types of rap, it does make sense that it would be harder for songs of
this genre to catch on. One of the big appeals for hip hop fans is not
only the beat of a rap song, but the MC’s lyrical skills. Go-go
rap songs are no different.
A defining element of go-go music, and its funky sound,
is its abundance of bass thumping beats complimented with a horn section,
best demonstrated by go-go artists like Trouble Funk. Trouble Funk, the
most well known of the D.C. go-go artists, was also the prime force behind
this genre.
Generations of future go-go artists were inspired by Trouble
Funk and their cutting edge album, Drop the Bomb, which debuted in 1982.
Go-go rap songs like “Get on Up” and “Don’t Try
to Use Me” are examples of Trouble Funk’s innovative style
which helped set the model for all artists of this genre. These songs
would make great additions to anyone’s library of go-go rap downloads.
If no such library exists, these downloads would be excellent for starting
your collection.
Other great go-go rap songs by Trouble Funk, as well as
other go-go artists, can be listened to by searching the go-go rap downloads
on your favorite internet sites. “Let’s Get Hot” and
“Pump Me Up” (also by Trouble Funk) are definitely worth a
listen.
Unfortunately, this brand of music never caught on nationwide, despite
a growing scene in Miami which then spawned a breed of go-go music all
of its own. At one time, go-go music seemed
like it would be a permanent fixture in the D.C. area. Because go-go music
never quite reached the popularity of other rap genres, it can sometimes
be hard to find at your local record store which is why go-go rap downloads
are not only convenient to you, but helpful to the genre. These songs
which were once a rare treat are now waiting to be found on your favorite
internet music sites, thanks to the help of go-go
rap downloads.
