Sandwiched between two bigger
R.E.M. hits,
the Automatic for the People album is a soft, underrated little gem that deserves repeated listening. “
Man on the Moon” is their biggest hit off the album and it is a sweetly endearing ballad about wondering what life is like in heaven. "
Try Not to Breathe" tells the story of an old man who is musing about dying, while my favorite song off the album, ”Everybody Hurts," is about deciding to live despite the hardships one suffers. Many rock fans have overlooked this album because it is so much gentler than most of R.E.M.’s work, but it is truly an album not to be missed.
