The Every Picture Tells a Story album is Rod Stewart during his early, dare I say, glory years, where he sounded very much like a gravelly voiced Sam Cooke and seamlessly blended soul, rock, folk and country in both his cover material and the songs that he penned himself. Two standouts among the latter are Maggie May" and "Mandolin Wind," both great songs, told from the viewpoint of a betrayed innocent looking back on the bittersweet episodes in his love life. These two songs have since become standards on classic rock radio and it’s no wonder; they represent music at its most creative.
