As catchy as it is sorrowful, Nick Drake’s debut, the Five Leaves Left album, will really have you missing this formidable folk artist. Here, a sensitive guitar and vocals are backed by the magnificent sounds of a chamber string group while the Platters’ lyrics point to a maturity well beyond Drake’s twenty years. There’s also something comforting amidst all the despair—we feel that Drake understands our feelings and gives voice to our thoughts. It’s a great album to listen to if you were ever feeling like your all alone. You’re not. And it’s too bad Drake didn’t stick around longer to prove it.
