The Mamas and the Papas would one day become known as a dysfunctional family of a band, but none of that is in evidence in their If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears album. This disc is infused with dreamy vocals and great musical arrangements every step of the way. Its innocence is in evidence in such tunes as "California Dreamin'" a touching honeymoon of a song; and its follow-up, "Monday Monday," is much the same--though it comes this close to overwhelming sappiness. "Spanish Harlem," "In Crowd," and Mama Cass Elliott's lead on the Beatles' "I Call Your Name" are just as enjoyable. Fans of the Mamas and Pappas will undoubtedly love this album, a precursor to all the craziness that would follow.
