The Meters - Look-Ka Py Py Album

The Look-Ka Py Py album is instrumental funk at its finest from a revered New Orleans band that almost singlehandedly developed the genre in the early 70s. Unlike James Brown's relentless-groove all-aboard specials, The Meters offer a steady diet of small, perfectly crafted tidbits, each of them an example of perfect control, poise, and musicianship. Never have I heard funk express so many different emotions as on this album. There are no favorites on this album; it's all flawless. This is music that would not only inform 70s R&B but would filter down into the jazz of the day. With its funky guitar and organ riffs, and a beautifully understated but stunningly precise rhythm section, this band was simply amazing.
