When the New York Dolls emerged onto the music scene in 1973 with the New York Dolls album, they appeared to be the heir apparent to the Rolling Stones self-destructive throne. But the Dolls didn't just burn the candle at both ends--they used a blowtorch on the middle. That’s probably why they were so short-lived, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that this breakthrough album had a huge influence on the future punk movement. The Ramones and the Sex Pistols probably wouldn't have existed without Johnny Thunders and David Johansen to show them the way with their high heels and track-marked arms.
