The Sandinista album shows that the Clash were not content to lay in the punk-rock meadow and yearned to experiment with many different types of genres. Here, you’ll find stabs at waltz, gospel, disco, children's ditties, funk, reggae, dub, delicate instrumental and psychedelic exploration (not to mention a Clash rocker or two). Highlights include “The Magnificent 7,” “
Somebody Got Murdered” and “Broadway,” but
Joe Strummer's voice can carry you through almost any song he sings. Sandinista! is a mess, but it's a happy mess and there's a positive energy flowing through it that you don’t find on many albums, including some of The Clash’s other efforts.
