The Paul Butterfield Blues Band album burst onto the scene in 1965 and was one of the leading offerings in the blues revival movement. White musicians have always been in love with imitating the blues as sung by black performers, but Butterfield actually stakes a claim to legitimacy on this album. The band consisted of Butterfield on vocals and harmonica, Mike Bloomfield, an ascending guitar God, on slide guitar, Elvin Bishop on rhythm guitar, Jerome Arnold on bass, Sam Lay on drums and Mark Naftalin on organ. Each handled his role impeccably on this album; it is one of this Chicago-bred band’s best and well worth a repeated listen.
