Listening back in 1967 to Pink Floyd's debut, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" album, you could have become convinced that Syd Barrett was headed for greatness. On the album, he seems equally adept at leading the band through sonic experimentation with oversized instrumental numbers like "Interstellar Overdrive" and catchy-sounding, Gothic-themed pop songs like See Emily Play," "The Scarecrow" and "The Gnome," However, Barrett would succumb to psychedelic drugs and the band would morph into something else entirely. Despite their later success without Barrett, this album stands as a testament to the band's greatness even in its early years.
