Neil Young - Tonight's the Night Album

In what would eventually speak to a generation of punk and grunge musicians, Neil Young’s Tonight’s the Night album shows where Neil’s head was at when two friends he was close to overdosed on drugs. It’s got a world weariness and resignation to it, that’s atypical for Neil, but it’s powerful all the same. The title track (and its closing reprise) is a haunting cry of "why?" Even the relative party songs, "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown" and "Roll Another Number," fit the album's sense of hopelessness. Neil would rebound on subsequent albums, but this one remains a testament to the greatness of his most personal and introspective songwriting skills.
