D'Angelo - Voodoo Album

In a genre flooded with water-downed offerings, D’Angelo shows that he has the chops to be one of our classic soul performers in his Voodoo album. There really isn’t a song to dislike in this collection, but D’Angelo is at his best when he slows things down and sings in the sultry, nonchalant manner of some of our classic soul performers like Marvin Gaye and Al Green and even Jimi Hendrix. D'Angelo covers a wide range of topics in this album-- sex, home cooking, the violent side of current street life--in a deceptively offhand, Roberta Flack-like manner. Despite all the comparisons, however, D’Angelo comes up with sound that was completely his own on this must-have album.
