Someone Say Something Biography (Continued)

the band’s drummer.

Carlo and Stephen founded the band with some friends about five years ago. Since then, the other members of the original band parted ways. Carlo and Stephen were left to keep the band's name - and their dream - alive.

With a new lead singer, the band's sound naturally changed, "for the better, of course!" laughs Marco. The eldest of the group - if only by one year - Marco has become its unofficial manager, handling its bookings and serving as spokesman. He describes their sound as a sort of "pop-punk" - modern pop rock with an edginess that recalls elements of punk - "but without the 'punk image,' " he emphasizes.

Their primary inspirations have been Green Day and Blink 182. In fact, says Marco, one of the best compliments they ever received was when one writer compared their music favorably with that band's. "Even before we all met, Blink 182 was everyone's favorite band," he explains. Especially pleased to hear it was their drummer. "Ryan grew up a huge Blink 182 fan."

The current Someone Say Something came together by fortunate chance.
Until recently, all the members were going to school in New Jersey - Marco to Montclair State University, Ryan to William Paterson College, and Carlo, Stephen and Tim to the County College of Morris. Tim, however, has since transferred to Pennsylvania State University. But it was the college connection that brought them together. According to Marco, Carlo and Stephen saw Tim playing with his old band "and they really liked the sound." When Tim informed them that his own band was breaking up, they immediately invited him to join their band. Someone Say Something now had a new lead singer. Not only are they primed musically, the young band members will also be well-prepared academically should Someone Say Something take off as they hope. Marco is majoring in marketing, and his brother Carlo, in music; Stephen is majoring in broadcasting; Ryan is a communication major specializing in music management; and Tim is a mathematics major.

All it needed now was a drummer. Harte got involved through a mutual friend who told him the band needed a fill-in drummer for a gig at the Bloomfield Avenue Cafe in Montclair, NJ. "And that was it," says Marco. "Everything just clicked….musically, we just gelled," says Marco. "Everything came together just right."

And it was not just the band members who felt the chemistry was close to perfect. "Our fans told us they couldn't believe how much better we sounded with the new band members," recalls Marco. "Before, we were just a group of kids playing together. But now - with Tim and Ryan with us - we have a real direction. And we know where we're heading."

Playing at New Jersey clubs, including The Bloomfield Avenue Café, which has "always been a great venue for underground music," says Marco, they hope to follow in the footsteps of other groups that passed through there en route to fame, including Fallout Boy, My Chemical Romance, and Gym Class Heroes. Unfortunately, the cafe has since closed for renovations.

With hard work and patience the opportunity the band was hoping for came in the form of an annual Break Contest, a chance to compete against the best local bands for the chance to perform for the 60,000 fans who attend the Bamboozle Music Fest at New Jersey’s Meadowlands.

After three years of submitting demos, Someone Say Something was selected from 184 bands that were chosen from thousands of bands from New York City, Philadelphia and New Jersey to compete in this final competition. Eventually, the 184 bands would be narrowed down in regional completions to only 21 bands that won a spot on the roster to perform at the Bamboozle Music Fest on May 5, 2007. However, by winning their local competition Someone Say Something won the spot to open up the Bamboozle Music Fest on the main stage for Bamboozle’s headliners, Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance.

Based on the tremendous response at the Bamboozle Music Fest Marco says, "we should be able to go out on the road." He also hopes to book more time in a quality music studio. Like the elder Colasacco, like their fans, the two brothers and their band mates feel, in their bones, that they're on the cusp - just a step away from true success. "I think we've really got something here," says Marco. "And we hope to prove it."

A Bit more about the members of Someone Say Something

Ryan has been drumming since second grade; Tim began playing guitar at the age of 12 after studying the piano. Stephen notes, "I started playing the guitar when I was 11 years old. I took lessons for about a year, but I got really impatient and quit. Then about a year later, I met Carlo, who ended up teaching me everything I know now about the guitar. When we started the band we couldn't find a bass player so I just taught myself the bass guitar and became the band's bass player."

For Marco and Carlo, music is in their blood. It is a legacy from their father, Mario, a native of Italy and a guitarist who signed with Sony during the 1980s. "But we ruined his career," Marco jokes, noting that his dad gave it up the life of a professional musician when he became a father.

Marco began studying piano at the age of four under the guidance of his grandmother. Although he gave it up at 12, he never lost his love of music. His brother Carlo took up guitar at the age of eight and started his own band in his freshman year of high school.
