Elvis 30th Death Anniversary - Biography

With the talent to fuse rock & roll with rhythm & blues, the charisma to unite black and white and the sexuality to send legions of female fans into a frenzy with a simple curl of his lip, it’s no wonder “King of Rock & Roll™” Elvis Presley ascended the throne in the 1950s and still has not relinquished it, even three decades after his untimely death. Few ever manage to become iconic enough to be known simply by their first name and only one– Elvis – managed to make a significant enough impact on the music and popular culture of the world to be considered one of the most important and beloved figures of the 20th century.

Elvis Aaron Presley was born January 8, 1935 to Vernon and Gladys Presley in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Tupelo, Mississippi. He got his first guitar at the age of 11 and by the time his family moved to Memphis when he was 13, he had already been seriously bitten by the music bug. Elvis was discovered by Sun Records label chief Sam Phillips, who realized that he had found a singer who could bridge the musical divide and bring black music to a white audience. In 1956, “Heartbreak Hotel,” Elvis’ first single for RCA became a smash hit selling well over one million copies. Despite his controversial style and sexually charged charisma, Elvis’ legend continued to grow... He became a superstar that year with his network television appearances, high-energy concerts and one hit record after another.

Despite a period in the early sixties when Elvis’ star was eclipsed by the British invasion, the King of Rock and Roll experienced a resurgence in the late sixties and early seventies, recording such hits as “Kentucky Rain,” “Suspicious Minds” and “In the Ghetto” and touring extensively throughout the United States. Two stellar achievements for him during this period were a record-breaking four-show smash at Madison Square Garden in 1972 and a history-making 1973 television special: “Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii," initially seen worldwide by1.5 billion people.

On June 26, 1977 Elvis ended his latest tour outing with a concert in Indianapolis, Indiana and returned home to Graceland™ for six weeks of rest before heading back out on tour. Little did he or anyone else know it would be his last show ever. On August 16, 1977, the day he was scheduled to leave on tour, Elvis Presley unexpectedly died at home in Memphis. He was the victim of heart failure at the age of 42 from years of health problems and prescription drug dependency. But by that time, Elvis had already unleashed a revolution that would change music forever.
