Phantom Planet seem to enjoy the thrill of rocking out in their Raise the Dead mp3, but at the same time they seem to feel completely in control of how the song moves from brisk acoustic guitars to a huge swell of strings and guitars. It’s an anthemic, rowdy sound that is a big, but welcome departure from their previous piano-driven work.

Phantom Planet just seem more comfortable all around on Raise the Dead than on their previous self-titled album. Their outbursts are more natural here than they were on Phantom Planet and though they are loud and rambunctious you can’t help but be swept up in their enthusiasm. Even with a few stumbles, this is a totally enjoyable disc.
