For all Phantom Planet’s angst, their sound on the Dropped mp3 is definitely uplifting. This sexy, polished tune is a definite toe-tapper, lead by the dueling guitars of Greenwald and Darren Robinson and nicely rounded out with hand claps. Dropped is more reminiscent of their earlier work than the rest of the tunes on their latest albums, and long-time fans should be pleased.

As for the rest of the tunes, Phantom Planet’s ‘Raise’ album is a great departure from 2004’s self-titled effort. Their fourth album (and first on new label Fueled By Ramen) sidesteps from the tight rock-pop of their previous three albums and delves into grander orchestration: strings, dynamics, children choirs, and more atmospheric, spaced out noises. While such experimentation could have proved a disaster, this time it actually leads to a quite enjoyable album.
