Part Afro-Cuban guitar frill (via Senegal? Congo? Guinea?), part hand drum, part ’80s college-rock innocence, the Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa mp3 sounds ready, on first listen, to get dropped off at the quad for a great game of Frisbee. Some ears might leave it there to die, but that would be a mistake as Vampire Weekend has many charms to recommend themselves. The band consists of four guys just getting out of college who have decided to throw their youth into something other than bad poetry and tight pants, in so doing infusing the and indie-pop scene with something pleasantly dorky, endearing, and progressive. I don’t know if they do the Kwassa Kwassa on Cape Cod, but they should certainly give it a try.
