In 2002, the The Killers took hold of the music scene with danceable rock tracks such as “Mr. Brightside” and “Somebody Told Me,” each filled with ‘80s inspired sounds, New Wave nods, unrepentant glam posturing and sharp lyrics. Since then, the Las Vegas group has expanded its sound to display influences such as Lou Reed and Bruce Springsteen. The Killers Human finds the band continuing to shift away from its early electro-pop sound in favor of a darker, somewhat more mature approach. Human MP3 is the lead single from the band’s third album, 2008’s Day & Age. Musically, Human MP3 download is strictly ‘80s, full of chilly New Orderish synthesizers that conjure images of MTV’s early days (although the accompanying music video lingers in the band’s usual timeless desert locale). Free Human Download finds controversial frontman Brandon Flowers drifting from his Duran Duran-esque Brit-pop affectations and slipping into a spacey David Bowie-meets-Peter Gabriel galaxy. Lyrics thematically drift through Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” but the music and vocals sound strikingly similar to Alphaville’s “Forever Young.” While the band will likely tout that this is the greatest album and song ever made (the posited similar claims following the release of Sam’s Town), it isn’t. However, Free Human download and the other songs on the album are worth checking out because they’re exceptionally likeable, if slightly unoriginal.
