Having cited such influences as Prince and Stevie Wonder, its no wonder that Australian soul newcomer Daniel Merriweather’s Change mp3 would be plenty funky with ample bass, drum rolls and retro horns. However, even as it pays a debt to the 60s-inspired soul sounds of Winehouse and Adele, et al, Change also is reminiscent of a great hip hop track. With its meddling pianos and heavy beat, it reminded me a lot of a Jay-Z tune. I don’t know if this was the intention of superstar producer Mark Ronson, who worked with Merriweather on this track, but let’s leave it alone because it does work. If this tune is any indication, Merriweather’s debut album, Love & War, should be a major hit. No more background vocals for Merriweather.
