MTV VMAs Honor Britney Spears

| (EZ-Tracks) - Last night’s MTV Video Music Awards was surprisingly lacking in the kind of high drama the show has become known for, but it did mark the comeback of Britney Spears, with the fading pop diva making up for last year’s debacle by taking home a bevy of honors. Spears won a leading three awards, including video of the year for "Piece of Me."
In each acceptance speech Sunday, Spears spoke briefly, thanked God and dedicated the awards to her fans, according to an Associated Press report. Even while opening the show, she was very businesslike, zipping through her few lines of introduction. The most controversial moments in an otherwise tame night occurred when host and former sex addict, Russell Brand, poked fun at the Jonas Brothers for wearing purity rings, vowing no premarital sex. Jordin Sparks, the American Idol champ, stuck up for the Jonas’ decision to remain celibate, and she, herself, claimed to be a purity ring wearer as well. For those keeping score, Kanye West again failed to reap any honors. West had threatened to boycott the show after last year’s ceremony when he came up blank, but had agreed last moment to be the event’s closing act.
