Yoko Ono: Pissed at NBC

Lisa Rogers, 11.22.2006, 04:28 PM
(EZ-Tracks) - Yoko Ono is stark raving mad at US broadcaster NBC for choosing to mark the 25th anniversary of her late husband's murder with the broadcasting of an interview with his nut bar killer Mark Chapman. Chilling recordings of Lennon's assassin Mark David Chapman describing the late Beatle's death on December 8, 1980 are to be aired on television in Britain and America next month. The tapes, recorded in the early 1990s by Chapman's biographer Jack Jones, trace the killer's disturbing "compulsion" to murder Lennon. Ono's spokesman, Elliot Mintz tells the New York Daily News, "The timing of this is macabre. She thinks it's outrageous. We're not going to learn anything new from him. NBC granted an assassin's wish. It sends out a message to other disturbed people that killing is a way to fame."

I couldn’t agree with Yoko Ono more…did I just say that out loud? Ahem. I caught a Mark Chapman Dateline Special (doesn’t that sound like the hugest oxymoron?) last week, and I couldn’t keep watching for more than 5 minutes. Chapman’s voice just gave me the heebie jeebies and his story is just creepy and evil. It’s not like he was sitting for an interview—it was a regurgitation of an interview on tape that Chapman gave years ago. When you turn stories like Chapman’s into a “NBC Special” you glorify and attempt to make his actions seem almost mystical when all he is a certified nutter.

I do not think that airing a special about Chapman will benefit anyone especiall on the anniversary. I was one of the few who was not a very big fan of the beatles. I will listen to music, but half of the time I am so busy that I never hear it. so my statement does not reflect of being a fan of John Lennon. I just feel the family needs privacy and we need to get on with living.
