| (EZ-Tracks) - Tony Benett’s new album, Duets/An American Classic, will be released on September 26th and act as a great precursor to Billboard’s 2006 Century Award which will be bestowed upon him in December at an awards show in Las Vegas. Here, we take a look back on the man who became a legend. Born August 3rd, 1926 in Astoria Queens Tony Bennett was quick to find his way into show business. By the age of 10, Tony Bennett was pursuing his dream and received the honor of performing at the opening of the Triborough Bridge – as he grew older, family hardship forced him to drop out of the art high school he was attending. On the brighter side of things, he found opportunities as a singing waiter in Italian restaurants. Later, Bennett served the country in World War II and (in addition to extensive combat experience) he sang in the military band. However, it wasn’t until his return to the states that he started to enjoy some significant successes. In 1950, with the help of Bob Hope, Bennett was signed to Columbia Records and put out his first demo. Over the years, Bennett had a string of hits that have spanned his entire career, all the way from the 1950’s up until today, such as: “Because of You,” “Blue Velvet,” “Rags to Riches,” “Stranger in Paradise,” “What is This Thing Called Love,” “Spring in Manhattan,” “A Taste of Honey,” “If I Ruled the World,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” and many more.” | ||||||||||||
