One of the leaders of the swing era in
jazz, Count Basie was one of the U.S.'s most beloved big band impresarios. Born August 21, 1904, in Red Bank, New Jersey, William "Count" Basie started out playing piano and organ for theater and vaudeville in the 1920s.
