With a distinctive vocal style that was at home in a variety of genres, Dinah Washington was one of the most beloved and influential figures in mid-Twentieth Century music. Born Ruth Lee Jones on Aug 29, 1924, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Washington moved to Chicago at age three and was raised in a world of gospel, playing the piano and directing her church choir.
