The first black male to attain mainstream acceptance as a popular singer, Nat
King Cole succeeded because he brought to the music industry class, style and immeasurable talent. Born Nathaniel Adams Cole on March 17, 1919 in Montgomery, Alabama, he was raised in Chicago, where he made his recording debut in 1936 with Eddie Cole's Solid Swingers, a sextet led by his brother.
