Although Nirvana pictures show a seemingly unassuming group of musicians, this group did more than any other to popularize punk, post- punk, and indie rock, unintentionally bringing it into the American mainstream like no other band before it. Led by vocalist Kurt Cobain, who would later commit suicide, the Seattle group’s ideology was indie rock coupled with pop melodies and merged with post-industrial white noise and heavy metal grind—a combination that would make the group an unprecedented multi-platinum sensation.
