Taking the phrase "concept group" to the extreme, The Village People were one of the most popular outfits of the 1970s disco era and to this day have sold over 85 million albums and singles worldwide. The band's name references New York City's Greenwich Village neighborhood, at the time known for having a substantial gay population.
