Free Crunk Music |
| Dirty South rap music represents the evolution of the crunk music genre. While dirty rap may not be Southern and Southern rap not necessarily dirty, dirty South rap artists showcase the best both these genres have to offer. Dirty South rap songs vary as much as the rappers that write them. Dirty South rap artists like Juvenile, OutKast, and Ludacris, among others are as different from each other as Dirty South rap music is from rock & roll. While the crunk music artists mentioned above were at one time part of the dirty South underground rap scene, like Eightball & MJG, they all had the talent and passion needed to make it big. Initially, dirty South underground rap was all there was of this genre, because gangsta rap reigned supreme. Crunk music artists knew they needed to push the envelope if they ever wanted to cross into the mainstream and bring the dirty South underground rap scene with them. Not only were dirty South rap artists competing with well established acts like 2 Live Crew, but Gangsta rap moguls like Dr. Dre. In order for dirty South rap music and crunk songs to rival gangsta rap, and other popular hip hop genres, dirty South rap artists knew they had to bring their hottest lyrics and most innovative DJing techniques to the rap game. To bust out of the dirty South underground rap scene, they had to be innovators. By the end of the nineties, dirty South rap songs had finally developed the unique sound it has today, now known as dirty South rap music. Some dirty South rap artists you may be familiar with today are Trick Daddy, David Banner, and Big Tymers. OutKast is a perfect rap group to illustrate what innovative is all about. Crunk songs from OutKast vary from dirty to spacey, but one thing OutKast’s dirty South rap songs have in common is that they display the kind of talent it took for dirty South rap artists to come out on top. An even more perfect example of dirty South underground rappers that made a big splash in mainstream hip hop are Eightball & MJG. These guys, like OutKast, were responsible for pushing dirty South rap music into the mainstream spotlight. One obstacle that crunk music faced in addition to being
the underdog is that crunk songs weren ’t all that lyrically
different from gangsta rap. Both gangsta and dirty South rap songs
contained sexually explicit lyrics and hard hitting beats. In the end,
the dirty South rap advantage came from the dirty south underground
rap scene.
