G-Funk hip hop is most closely
associated with Dr. Dre, the pioneer of this special breed of gangsta
rap. G-Funk stands for “Gangsta Funk.” Some of G-Funks artists
include Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and many more. If
you download G-funk music from any of these artists you won’t be
disappointed.
Throughout the G-Funk era, which lasted until about 1996,
G-Funks artists were known for their slightly slower grooves and non-political
lyrics. Unlike the socially conscious rap artists that looked down on
gangsta life, G-Funks artists approached gangsta themes with a smile,
often embracing the self-indulgent aspects of gangsta life.
G-Funks artists rhymed about
drugs, partying, girls, and guns – often in the most vulgar way
possible, which is why the fight for G-Funk hip hop was such an uphill
battle. Without any media support, G-Funk hip hop was entirely underground
until N.W.A released its G-Funk era classic, Straight Outta Compton. If
you’re looking to download G-Funk music, this is the album to get
it off of.
On the way up, G-Funk hip hop received zero support, if
any, from the media. The G-Funk era classic, Straight Outta Compton, released
from N.W.A. relied on underground promotions in order to top the record
sales of other contemporary rappers.
During the G-Funk era, Dr. Dre and Suge Knight’s
Death Row Records reigned supreme and had many of G-Funks artists signed
to them. Snoop Dogg and 2Pac were just two of the many premiere artists
on Death Row records. The end of the G-Funk era coincided with the end
of Death Row records. But, Dr. Dre, the pioneer of G-Funk, wasn’t
finished yet. He went on to create Aftermath records and start a new chapter
in his life.
If you plan to download G-Funk music you should also
check out George Clinton and The Parliament Funkadelic. George Clinton
and his group’s wacky songs will help lend a clue to what inspired
G-Funk. When you do decide to download G-Funk music, check out “Nuthin’
but a ‘G’ Thang,” or “California Love.”
Or, if you’re looking to download G-Funk music with a little more
R&B flavor, see if you like Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s “Tha
Crossroads.”
