The iPod Touch is one of the most innovative free music players on the market today. With only one tactile button (not including the power/hold button) it has led the trend in touch screen downloadable iPod music players. Coupled with apples solid reliability this device is sure to remain a mile marker of innovation in its time.

iPod Touch Features

The most noticeable feature of the iPod Touch is the multi-touch 3.5-inch color screen. The multi-touch allows you to use applications on the phone more smoothly by having actions such as pinch zoom. Other features include wifi connectivity, with a fully functional safari Internet browser, e-mail, Google maps, a built in youtube app, and widgets such as weather and stocks. The Touch also has a built in accelerometer with allows the screen to switch into portrait mode when the device is turned on its side when applicable.

The design of the iPod Touch is even simpler than its family of iPod products. The case is only slightly bigger dimensionally than its screen, with the only tactile control button located in the center at the bottom of the player. On the top is the power and hold button, and on the bottom you'll find the headphone jack and the standard 30-pin iPod connector. The front of the player, which is the touch screen, is made with optical grade glass to prevent scratching. The player uses electronic pulses from the users finger to control the touch screen, which gives way to one of the few downsides of the player, you can't use it with a glove on, however the response is better than other touch screen players because of this technology.

Free iPod Music Downloads

The audio quality of iPod Touch music downloads is as good as its iPod counterparts. It has a range from 20 Hz to 20k Hz and as usual comes with the uncomfortable and easily breakable iPod standard headphones. The sound quality does lack with the standard buds, but if you use any descent pair of headphones with the player all free downloadable iPod music sounds excellent. One downside is a lack of custom equalizing controls, even though there is a long list of EQ presets, the player still disallows total listening customization.

The iPod Touch interface is completely controlled via touch screen with the exception of the home button located at the bottom of the device. Some other MP3 player reviews say this is a bad thing due to lack of tactility, but it allows the buttons on the screen to change into whatever they need to be at the moment. The menu's themselves are very simple to navigate, with all of your options coming up directly on the screen in front of you. Lag is as close to non-existent as possible, however sometimes you have to wait a second for the player to return to the home screen when you hit the home button. The home screen is completely customizable, allowing you to move buttons around and even stretch them across multiple pages. One slight annoyance however is the popup wifi connection menu, which will sometimes just pop up while your in the middle of doing something else.

The iPod Touch performs almost flawlessly in all ways. The battery power is rated to 22 hours of free music for iPod and 5 hours of video, and under regular use will hold up to those numbers. If you browse the Internet a lot the battery will drain quicker, but still lasts a solid 15-20 hours. Because of the docking station however it's hard to forget to plug it in, and thus it'll be charged more often. The only real problem with performance is caused by external factors, because when the wifi connection is slow everything will take longer to work.

The iPod Touch is both innovative and reliable, and considering the vast list of features its well priced as well. In three sizes, 8, 16 and 32 gig, there's one for everyone. Combined with the ability to sync directly to iTunes and other sources of free iPod music downloads, basically the most popular Internet music store, it really is the whole package in a tiny little device.
