The Insignia Pilot MP3 Player is an affordable and functional multimedia player. It comes in two sizes, 4 and 8 GB, and uses flash memory. It also has an expandable SD memory slot that supports any capacity SD card.
Features
The Pilot features Bluetooth, FM radio tuning, line-in recording, and SD expandable memory. These features makes the Pilot very versatile and able to please most users. The Bluetooth feature itself is very nice if you have wireless headphones, and doesn't detriment the sound quality by any noticeable amount.
Design
The Pilot is a very simply designed MP3 player, built for reliability and stability. The 2.4-inch screen is not the best, but displays good color and is fairly bright. Other MP3 player reviews agree that the Pilot can take a pretty hard beating, however it's important to be careful with the screen that is definitely scratchable.
Audio Quality
The audio is clear but the bass isn't powerful enough to get a real full sound. The average listener probably won't care, but if you're a bit of an audiophile you might want to watch out. The Pilot has 5 EQ presets, however they are basically useless, but there is a custom 5-band EQ also which works very well.
Interface
The interface on the Pilot can definitely get a little confusing. Once learned it will get easier to navigate but it still has downfalls. The tactile buttons themselves are actually pretty easy to use and well laid out. The click wheel on the Pilot glows blue, which is reminiscent of the SanDisk players like the e200 series. The main menu screen can either be a scrolling circle of icons or a grid, however the icons take a little getting used to because they look somewhat arbitrary in some situations; text does come up under the selected icon to tell you the name however. This is definitely not one of the most amazing interfaces, however it does work fairly well in most situations.
Performance
The battery is rated to get 25 hours of audio playback but in reality gets more like 20, and when playing video it gets a little under 5 hours on average. The line in audio recorder performs very well, which is surprising yet pleasing. Its one of the best features on the Pilot, especially if you're a musician because the feature will often come in handy. The audio and video playback is very smooth, with basically no lag after an initial split second while loading. All in all the player is pretty smooth though.
The Pilot is definitely a budget player for the included functions, however because its store brand it is a little lacking, but what else would you expect. For the price its definitely a good buy, and its very reliable as well, but if you're an audiophile you may want to go with something else.
