The iRiver S10 is one of the smallest MP3 players on the market today, and is surprisingly packed with features for a player as small as your average car door remote. The S10 has a 1.15 inch OLED screen that is surprisingly clear and colorful for its size, and gives it a one up on the iPod shuffle, its closest competitor for size and function.
The main feature of course is how small it is, but the S10 can also display images (sadly BMP format only), and it has a built in FM radio and voice recorder. This is the end of the features list, however considering how much space they had its pretty amazing.
The player itself is a tiny rectangle, with less than 2 square inches of surface on the top. The top of the player has the headphone jack, which is also where the USB adapter plugs in. The right side of the player has a small power button and opposing it on the left side are volume controls. The navigation controls are the "D-Click" system used on other iRivers, which consists of "floating" buttons on each side of the screen to control the user interface. Also, other MP3 player reviews agree that case itself is surprisingly sturdy for such a small device.
The audio quality, like everything else in this player, is surprisingly good for the size of the thing. The stock headphones are garbage as usual, but any average pair will sound just fine. The S10 doesn't really have the power for headphones over the 100-dollar mark, but unless you're an audiophile you should be fine. There's also a built in 5-band EQ with 10 presets and custom settings.
The interface is very well thought out, as it has to be to fit on such a small screen. The "D-Click" system works very well for this device because of its simplicity, only displaying what you absolutely need on every menu. Skipping around through songs and navigating is actually very easy, and only takes a minute or two to get used to.
The S10 actually gets the full 8 hours of batter power that it's rated to. It would be nice if it had more but the battery is small like the rest of the player so its trading size for power. The menus and playback are lag-less, and the players screen savers don't lag either. The auxiliary functions work well also, with the audio recorder being very handy in such a tiny little device; it almost makes you feel like a spy.
The iRiver S10 is surprisingly tiny, very functional, and simple to use. The tiny little player holds a very nice screen and is very reliable. This is a great device to have on the go, especially when you have minimal pocket space.
