The 2 Live Crew Is What We Are, released on Luke Records, started 2 Live Crew’s future legacy of dirty, sexually charged material. ty. One of the biggest hits off this album was “Me So Horny”, made popular by MTV. The Supreme Court eventually overturned this decision. Even though there was controversy behind the album, it did remarkably well on the Billboard and R&B charts. George Lucas sued the band member/manager nicknamed Luke Skyywalker to which the band responded with the album Banned in the USA.
The group was the first rap group to release a live album. Unfortunately, the album did not match up to the success of the previous albums and the band broke up. The group tried to reunite in 1994 as The New 2 Live Crew but this reunion was short lived. The New 2 Live Crew broke up in 1995. Yet again, the band reunited again for a single in the movie Friday.
Although nothing the few remaining band members have done recently has been widely recognized, 2 Live Crew’s fans remain devoted. Despite all the controversy around their names, the group’s contributions to the rap world are immeasurable.
