2 Unlimited music biography continued...
and singer Anita Doth, who had worked in the Amsterdam club scene. In September 1991, the quartet came out with a fresh version of a tune they had previously recorded called "Get Ready For This," which was an immediate hit in Europe, Australia and Japan. To prove they were more than a single song, the album Get Ready was released in February 1992, featuring 9 tracks and 5 additional remixes. The album is developed in three parts, including a 'romantic' section featuring the first ballads. The success of the album (gold status in the US, over 500 000 copies sold, and more than 2 million copies sold across the world) largely confirmed their talent. By 1996, 2 Unlimited had 14 consecutive singles that went top ten in the international market. Their earliest effort, "Get Ready for This," reached Number Two on the charts. By far their greatest achievement was 1993's "No Limits," which hit Number One in 35 countries and sold in excess of two million copies worldwide by 1996. Its attendant album broke three million in sales; Real Things debuted at the top of Billboards Hits of the World chart when it came out in 1995. By the time they released a greatest hits compilation in 1996, the record industry had presented them with over 150 gold and platinum records, and MTV had honored the release of Real Things with a three-hour television special at Disneyland, Paris.
Despite their huge public success, there was a great deal of personal dissension amongst the quartet and in 1996, Anita and Ray departed the group to embark on separate efforts. As they still owned the rights to the name "2 Unlimited", DeCoster and Wilde recruited two new (again Dutch) singers, Romy van Ooijen and Marjon van Iwaarden, in order to capitalize on previous success. The new quartet's output failed to capture the public imagination and in 1998 the two new singers left the group. In recent years, many "best of" compilations have been released in various territories, often with new remixes, a testament to 2 Unlimited's ongoing popularity. They may have left the clubs for good, but the clubs of Europe have never given up on them.
