of ex-hairdresser Mike Score (lead vocals, keyboards), his brother Ali (drums), and fellow hairdresser Frank Maudsley (bass). They added guitarist Paul Reynolds several months later and released their debut EP on Cocteau Records early in 1981. "Telecommunication," one of the tracks off the EP became an underground hit in new wave dance clubs and led to a major label contract with Jive. The band's self-titled debut came out in the spring of 1982 and boasted a single called "I Ran (So Far Away)," which went on to become a runaway hit when its video was placed in heavy rotation on MTV. The single peaked in the top ten in the United States and took the album along for the ride. The Seagulls second album, Listen, came out in 1983 and had a single called, "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)," which reached the top ten in the UK and the top 40 in the U.S.

Seagulls began to disintegrate after the release of 1984's, The Story of a Young Heart, which failed to chart any singles. The band's lineup was changed without any corresponding change in their fortunes, and they broke up in 1986. . Mike Score assembled a new lineup of A Flock of Seagulls in 1989, releasing the single "Magic" and touring the U.S. The song did poorly and several of the Seagulls went their separate ways by the end of the year. A new lineup continued to tour worldwide, and in 1996 released a new album. The cream of their later catalogue, however, including the minor hits "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)" and "The More You Live, the More You Love," can be found on The Best of a Flock of Seagulls, which was subsequently released for fans who still held the Seagulls' music near and dear.
