The meaning of the band’s abbreviated name has been argued among fans over the years, but the most common definition given by the band is typically A Fire Inside.




AFI formed in Ukiah, California in 1991, while singer Davey Havoc, bassist Vic Chalker and guitarist Mark Stopholese were still in high school.




The band split briefly for college, but following a one-off reunion show, several members of the band left college to focus on reforming AFI.




The band released an extensive series of EPs on it its own prior to signing with Nitro Records for its second full length, 1996’s Very Proud of Ya.

While the band’s early efforts were hardcore punk affairs full of high-speed guitar riffs and teen angst, 1999’s Black Sails in the Sunset found the quartet settling into a new line-up and a new sound more akin to the romantic, theatrical, goth-laced punk the band is known for today.




In 2003 the band made a huge leap from its independent roots and signed with the super label, DreamWorks. The pairing resulted in one album, 2003’s Sing the Sorrow. The group’s even more successful follow-up, December Underground was released by Interscope in 2006 and spawned popular singles such as the Green Day Continued...

clone “Miss Murder,” which reached the top of the Billboard charts.




The band’s music has been featured in Tony Hawk’s popular skateboard-themed video games, film soundtracks and, most recently, in the Guitar Hero video game.
