Berggren and Linn Berggren and their keyboardist brother, Jonas "Joker" Berggren, as well as keyboardist Ulf "Buddah" Ekberg. In the summer of 1990, after playing on the local club circuit, the band scored their first recording contract and had their first hit in Scandinavia with "Wheel of Fortune." The band broke out internationally in 1992 with their single, "All That She Wants," which was described as a "unique dark fusion of dub-reggae with pop" and became the band's signature sound. In May, "All That She Wants" continued to hit all round the world and topped the chart for three weeks in the United Kingdom. However, despite Mega Records' hard efforts to secure a distribution deal in the United States the response was always the same: "this band will never work in the States". But Clive Davis, founder of Arista Records and the man who had discovered Whitney Houston, thought otherwise, and by the end of 1993 "All That She Wants" had made its way to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their second single, "The Sign," became an even bigger hit abroad and in the United States, where it spent six weeks at #1 becoming the best-selling single of the year 1994. Other hit Ace of Base songs followed including "Living in Danger" "Don't Turn Around" and later "Cruel Summer."
Now well into their second decade of performing together (now minus Linn), Ace of Base has won many awards and set several records. Their first album, The Sign, was given the Guinness World Record for "Best-Selling Debut Album". Combined sales of Happy Nation, later released as The Sign, are thought to have now reached 23 million. In 1994, the band were awarded two American Music Awards including "Best Single" for "The Sign", which was also certified the year's best-selling single at the Billboard Music Awards. In addition, they have received three Grammy nominations, including "Best New Artist" which was awarded to Sheryl Crow. As of 2008, the band continues to tour and record, demonstrating to fans that old dance club bands don't fade away; they continue to reinvent themselves to suit the times.
