the Atlantic. Born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins on May 5, 1988 in Enfield, North London, Adele graduated from The BRIT School for performing arts & technology in Croydon in May 2006, which was the same performing arts school attended by Amy Winehouse, Katie Melua, Leona Lewis and Kate Nash. She was playing small gigs in London when a friend of hers put her music on MySpace, where music lovers flocked to take a listen. This, in turn, led to a deal with XL Records. Adele broke out with her second single for the label, "Chasing Pavements," about the break up of a relationship. In January 2008, the tune hit #2 for 4 weeks in the UK Chart was still in the Top 40 14 weeks after release. On January 28, 2008 her debut album 19, was released in the United Kingdom. The album went straight to #1 in the UK charts and was certified platinum within a month of its release. Adele then signed with Columbia Records in the United States and embarked on a North American tour, which was followed by the June 2008 release of 19 in the U.S. and stardom in America as well as Great Britain.
Adele has said that she plans to write her next album in New York because it would give her the inspiration she is lacking at home where things are comfortable and unchallenging. She has mixed feelings about fame, but feels she has something pleasing to offer her fans nonetheless. About comparisons to Winehouse, Adele calls herself another "big drinker," but says she's never indulged in drugs and has no plans to do so, even under the pressures that fame brings. She still lives in her North London home with her mother, and is content to focus on the music—something her growing number of fans are counting on.
