Alejandro Sanz music biography continued...
collaborations. Born Alejandro Sánchez Pizarro on December 18, 1968, in Madrid, Spain, Sanz had a father who was a professional guitarist and introduced him to music at an early age. As a teenager, Sanz performed at local venues and eventually became acquainted with Miguel Angel Arenas, a music industry insider who got Sanz his first record contract. A gifted songwriter with good looks, Sanz proved immensely popular even with his debut album, Viviendo de Prisa (1991), which was a number one hit in Spain and earned him millions of female fans who loved his sexy love ballads. Subsequent hit albums such as Si Tu Me Miras (1993), Basico (1993), and 3 (1995) followed, each reaching platinum status, and making Sanz a household name in Spain and the rest of the Latin world. Sanz would breakthrough internationally on his 1997 album, Más which thanks to a key hit single, "Corazón Partío," transcended his core female audience and brought him an even wider fan base. Propelled by "Corazón Partío," as well as additional singles "Y, ¿Si Fuera Ella?," "Amiga Mía," "Aquello Que Me Diste," and "Siempre Es de Noche," Más became the most successful Spanish pop record ever, selling millions worldwide, and establishing Sanz as one of the most commercially successful Spanish singers ever.
By this point, Sanz had earned a great following across the Atlantic, and his next recording, MTV Unplugged (2001), was a clear effort to further his growing popularity in the Americas. The intimate concert performance featured a newly written single, "Y Sólo Se Me Ocurre Amarte," which became a hit, and set the stage for 2003's No Es Lo Mismo, an album which featured Sanz's experiments with rap and electronica. Though bolder than before, No Es Lo Mismo was yet another worldwide success, reaching number 128 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The same year, Sanz won the Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album, which led to a collaboration with Shakira on one of the 2005's most successful singles, "La Tortura." Since then, each Sanz release has been met with a rapturous response from fans that can't get enough of our hottest Spanish star.
