Ali Campbell music biography continued...
Campbell and seven other musicians founded UB40 in the late 70s and caught their first break when Chrissie Hynde noticed them at a pub and gave them an opportunity as a support act to her band, The Pretenders. UB40's first single, "King"/"Food for Thought" was released on Graduate Records, a local independent label, and It reached #4 on the UK Singles Chart. Their first album was titled Signing Off, was released in September 1980 and climbed to #2 on the UK album chart, spending 72 weeks in total on the chart. Since that time, UB40, lead by Campbell, placed more than 50 singles on the UK charts. Despite great success in the UK, UB40's popularity in the United States was only established after they released Labour of Love, an album of cover songs, in 1983. The album reached #1 on the UK Albums Chart and #8 on the Billboard Top 200 in the US. The album featured the song, "Red Red Wine", a cover version of a Neil Diamond song, which peaked at # 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. UB40's most successful worldwide single release was the cover of the Elvis Presley ballad "(I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You" which was the main title to the 1993 Sharon Stone movie Sliver and was a number one hit across Europe and in the U.S.
Campbell took time out to record a solo album, Big Love, in 1995. In 2007, he followed up with Running Free, which entered the UK Albums Chart at number 9, and was the first Top 10 studio album for Campbell, since Labour of Love III was released ten years earlier. In January 2008, citing differences with other band members, Campbell officially left UB40. In 2009, he recorded Flying High, a solo album that reflected Campbell's outlook after leaving a band he had been with for 30 years.
