All Saints music biography continued...

began recording and writing at a studio on All Saints Road, in a London suburb. The duo, joined by R&B vocalist Simone Rainford, released a single for ZTT Records in 1995, but then parted ways with Rainford. They were subsequently dropped by the label. Unfazed, Blatt and Lewis recruited native Canadian Nicole Appleton and, later, her older sister Natalie, to make All Saints a quartet. The group came out with a demo tape of the song "I Know Where It's At," and with a help of a friend in the industry, scored a record deal with London Records, where they were guided by some top flight producers. When it was released in 1996, the tune "I Know Where It's At" hit number four on the British charts and crossed over throughout Europe and Asia. By 1997, All Saints had reached #1 with their second single, "Never Ever." The quartet released their self-titled debut album in November 1997, and began to grow in America as well, reaching the Top 40 with "I Know Where It's At." By 1998, All Saints was certified platinum in the U.S. and 5x platinum in the U.K, making them a pop phenomenon.

Amidst rumor of an impending breakup, All Saints came out with the single, "Pure Shores" in 2000. The tune was featured on the soundtrack to the Leonardo DiCaprio film, The Beach. The long-awaited sophomore effort, Saints & Sinners, was finally issued in October 2000, with the second single, "Black Coffee," making the charts. Still, storm clouds were gathering. By the start of 2001, tours of Japan and Australia were canceled. Soon after, the girls announced that they were parting company to pursue solo careers, finally pulling the plug on a band that many believed could have staying power for many years.
