Aqua Biography (Continued) |
nish film Fraekke frida og de frygtløse spioner. While working on their project, they invited Norwegian club DJ René for further input on the soundtrack. The three enjoyed working together and proposed the idea of starting a music group. They soon encountered lead vocalist Lene forming Joyspeed in 1994. Signed to a Swedish Record label, the group released their debut single “Itsy Bitsy”. Due to the poor reaction to the single, the group cancelled their contract with the label.
Joyspeed soon became Aqua landing a record contract with Universal Denmark in 1996. The single “Roses are Red” was released in September of the same year and blew up the charts in Denmark. The follow-up single “My Oh My” was released in February 1997 debuting at number one in Denmark and was certified gold within six days.
Their premiere album, Aquarium was first released in Denmark in March of 1997, then worldwide in November. The third single off of the album, “Barbie Girl” proved to be a success peaking in the Top Ten on the charts in several countries. The song also sparked much controversy with Mattel, the creators of the Barbie Doll. They filed a lawsuit against Aqua claiming that the group misrepresented the doll with the songs’ sexual overtones and double meanings. The charges were eventually dropped in 2002. Other notable singles from the album “Doctor Jones” and “Lollipop” were well received spending several weeks in the Top Ten mostly in Europe as well as Australia.
In 2000 Aquarius was released proving to be a hit among Aqua’s already established fan base. This album introduced some new styles and sounds to their repertoire with the Latin-influenced “Cuba Libre” as well as the orchestral and anthem inspired “Cartoon Heroes”. Aqua soon embarked on a tour and began planning the release of a third album however the group announced their split in July 2001.
