Arctic Monkeys music biography continued...
(guitar), Andy Nicholson (bass), and Matt Helders (drums) formed the Arctic Monkeys in Sheffield, England, in 2003. After playing several local gigs, the band started making demo CDs and passing them out to fans. One of their fans made a MySpace page for the group and before long they became Internet sensation (even as they confessed they knew nothing about the online music scene). In May 2005, the band released their first EP, 'Five Minutes with Arctic Monkeys' and later found their concerts at British music festivals mobbed. Resisting the temptation to go with a major label, the Arctic Monkeys eventually signed to Domino Records with Epic covering in the United States. Fueled by chart topping singles, "You Look Good on the Dancefloor" and "When the Sun Goes Down," the Arctic Monkey's debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, was released at the end of January 2006 and became the fastest-selling debut album in UK chart history. The next week, the album was released in the US, where it debuted at 24 on the album chart. At the NME Awards that year, Arctic Monkeys won three fan-voted awards, for Best New Band, Best British Band and Best Track, firmly signaling their arrival.
After a lineup change, the band came up with their next single, '"When the Lights Come On," which peaked at #4 on the UK charts. At the same time, Whatever I Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, won the prestigious Mercury Music Prize. In 2007, Arctic Monkey released their next studio album, Favourite Worst Nightmare. Although its singles didn't do as well on the charts as those from their debut album, they held their own on the British charts. In 2008, the group accepted the Brit Award in the Best British Band category, making Artic Monkeys one of the earliest success stories to have sprung directly from the Internet. "What's happened has been proper hysterical," Turner has been quoted as saying. And fans hope it stays that way.
