Released in 1989, the album Tender Lover yielded four singles, including the R&B chart smashes "It's No Crime" (number one) and "Whip Appeal" (number two). The album ultimately went platinum and provided entre into some high profile songwriting and producing gigs for the likes of Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and others. The proper follow-up to Tender Lover, For the Cool in You appeared in 1993 and was an even bigger hit than its predecessor, going triple platinum and producing Babyface's first Top Five pop hit, the change-of-pace acoustic guitar ballad "When Can I See You Again" (which won him his first Grammy as a performer for Best Male R&B Vocal). After great success as a producer, songwriter and composer on the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack, which led to more jobs and three consecutive Grammy's for Producer of the Year, Babyface came back to performing with 1997's The Day. The album spawned another Top Ten pop/R&B hit in "Every Time I Close My Eyes," and proved that Babyface still had the chops to a make magic in front of the mic, as well as behind it. For the next few years Babyface busied himself with more work on movie soundtracks and with the founding of a film production company, but in 2000, his longtime label, Epic, came out with a Greatest Hits Collection, which showcased all of the tremendously gifted performers great tracks.
Babyface continued to stay abreast of the times, by coming back with Face2Face, a hip collection of tracks featuring Snoop Dogg. He also signed a new deal with Island Records to release Playlist, an album consisting of eight cover songs and two original works. It was released in September 2007 by the newly re-launched Mercury Records Label. All in all, Babyface has sold over 10 million albums as a solo performer by deftly blending R&B and pop and bringing his soulful sound to urban contemporary fans around the globe.
