Banda El Recodo music biography continued...
clarinet player Don Cruz Lizárraga. In the early '50s, Lizárraga joined a banda de musica sinaloense, gradually becoming the group's director. Shortly after moving to Mazatlan, he accepted an invitation to sign with RCA Victor. Although he recorded his first two tunes, "Mi Adoracion" and "El Callejero," with a quintet, he soon formed La Banda el Recodo with its classic lineup of The ensemble consists of four clarinets, three trumpets, a tambora: a bass drum with a cymbal on top, a tarola: a snare drum, a tuba (Sousaphone style), three trombones, and three singers.
Lizárraga continued to lead La Banda el Recodo until his death from cancer in 1995. Lizarraga's clarinetist sons, German and Alfonso, have taken over the group and have undertaken extensive international tours. Five years after the death of Lizárraga, La Banda el Recodo won a Grammy for Best Banda Performance for "Lo Mejor de Mi Vida" at the first annual Latin Grammy Awards, making Banda Latin superstars.
Today, Banda el Recodo continues to be one of the most famous and most popular Mexican folk music bands of all time. Their album No Me Sé Rajar peaked at number one at the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart in 2002. They continue to prolifically release albums in the new millennium, including 2006's Mas Fuerte Que Nunca, which mixed banda with other musical influences, including salsa and cumbia. La Banda el Recodo has recorded more than 178 records and has brought its music from the slums of Mexico to the most extravagant world venues. Performing a mixture of Latin dance tunes, jazz swing, and classical music, Banda is continuously pleasing old fans and earning new generations of listeners that are just as devoted to their music.
