Barbra Streisand music biography continued...
and wherever she performs. Born on April 24, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York, Streisand is considered one of the most commercially and critically successful female entertainers in modern entertainment history and one of the best selling solo recording artists in the US, selling over 71 million albums and more gold records than any other performer. Because of that, she's the #1 female solo artist in the US and the #5 female artist worldwide.
Streisand's early works in the 1960s (her debut, The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theatre and nightclub standards. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one Barbra Streisand songs like "The Way We Were", "Evergreen", "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" (with Donna Summer) and "Woman in Love"; some of these came from soundtrack records to her films. In the 80s, Streisand returned to her roots in the musical theater and recorded The Broadway Album, for which she won her 8th Grammy Award.
In 1992, Streisand's concert fund raising events helped propel former President Bill Clinton into the spotlight and into office. In 1993, Streisand made global news, announcing her first public concert tour in 27 years. Tickets to the limited tour were sold out in less than one hour. Streisand also hit the cover of major magazines, in anticipation of what Time magazine named "The Music Event of the Century". The tour was one of the biggest all-media merchandise parlays in history and made Streisand the highest paid concert performer ever. Barbra Streisand: The Concert went on to be the top grossing concert of the year, earned five Emmy Awards and the Peabody Award, and the taped broadcast on HBO is, to date, the highest rated concert special in the cable network's history. Streisand would continue to perform in concert intermittently well into the new millennium, with each tour surpassing the previous in terms of popularity and money grossed. She has, and will always be, the diva to end all divas.
