Barenaked Ladies music biography continued...
Page, who were subsequently joined by bassist Jim Creeggan, his brother Andy on keyboards, and drummer Tyler Stewart. The band came out with their independently released first album, Yellow Tape in 1991, which went on to become the only indie released album to go platinum up until that date. A bidding war amongst the major labels ensued, and Sire ultimately signed the band. Their madcap and hip debut, Gordon, was released in 1992, and college kids throughout North America pledged their allegiance to singles like "Be My Yoko Ono," "Enid," and the charming favorite "If I Had a $1,000,000." Suddenly, Barenaked Ladies were as cool as the Tragically Hip. In 1994, at the height of grunge, Barenaked Ladies came out with the mellow acoustically-focused album, Maybe You Should Drive. The disc spawned several more singles lapped up by college audiences, including "Alternative Girlfriend" and "Jane." After guitarist/keyboardist Kevin Hearn replaced Creeggan, BNL achieved even greater success when their single "This Old Apartment" became a Top 40 hit and was heard on the hit show, 'Beverly Hills 90\210.' Their brilliant live shows were captured on their first live album, Rock Spectacle, which was also their first album to go gold in the U.S., and establish BNL's zaniness as mainstream pop.
Stunt, the band's fifth album, was issued in July 1998 and debuted at number 3 on Billboard. It included the single "One Week" which was their most popular hit to date. Maroon followed two years later, yielding the hit single "Pinch Me." That same year, BNL won two Juno Awards for Best Pop Album and Best Group, as well as being nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "Pinch Me." Now more mature and a whole lot wiser, BNL continues to record and perform, demonstrating that grown ups can still be kids at heart.
