2000, the band is composed of sisters Alyssa Barlow (lead vocals, bass, keyboard), Becca Barlow (backing vocals, guitar), and Lauren Barlow (lead vocals, drums). As youngsters, the girls wrote songs and sang backing vocals for their father, who performed in churches throughout the country. In mid 2002, they made the finals of the Gospel Music Association's Music in the Rockies seminar at Estes Park, Colorado. Record companies soon started courting them, and the girls signed with Fervent Records in October 2003. BarlowGirl released their self-titled debut album in February 2004. The album yielded "Mirror" and "Never Alone," the longest running number-one song in 2004 on R&R's Christian Hit Radio and CRW's Rock charts. These number-one songs earned the trio four 2005 Gospel Music Association (GMA) awards (formerly the Dove Award) nominations, including the Best New Artist award, Best Rock Song, and Rock Album. The trio ended up being the best-selling new Christian artist of 2004.
In September 2005, BarlowGirl came out with their sophomore effort, Another Journal Entry. The album debuted at number three on Soundscan's Christian album chart, and had reached eighty-five on Billboard's Top 200 Current Albums chart by October 2005. The trio was nominated for three additional 2006 GMA awards - "Group of the Year", "Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year", and "Rock Recorded Song of the Year" for "Let Go". BarlowGirl again recorded with producer Otto Price for their third studio album How Can We Be Silent. The album was released on July 24, 2007. How Can We Be Silent debuted at #1 on Billboard's Christian Chart, and #40 on Billboard's Top 200 album. It was the first album by an all-female rock band to reach the top 40 on the Billboard 200 since "Everything" by the Bangles in 1989. With superstardom certainly with in their grasp, BarlowGirl released Love & War in September 2009. "Life is hard," Lauren says. "People don't want to know that your life is perfect. They want to know that you've struggled. They don't want the answers. They want to know if you're in pain how you're going through it. Especially kids in our generation. They want something real." BarlowGirl is certainly giving fans that.
