Billy Idol: Mony Mony-#1-1987: Former Generation X bandleader Billy Idol became one of the biggest acts in pop music in the early 80s. The Brit with the spiked hair scored a number of hit singles and sold albums in the millions with tracks like “White Wedding”, “Rebel Yell” and “Eye’s Without A Face”. One of the first American pop/rockers to thank MTV for his success, Billy Idol built a reputation based on his bad boy image and compelling, punk-influenced music. Born William Michael Albert Broad on November 30, 1955, in Middlesex, England, Idol relocated with his family for a brief spell to New York, before returning back to England, where he changed his last named to Idol (after a teacher who had written on a report card that he was idle in class) and played with a band called Generation X. scored a record deal with Chrysalis and released a self-titled debut album in 1982. A pair of eye-catching videos for the tracks "White Wedding" and "Dancing With Myself” got major air time on MTV, with both clips focusing in on Idol's spiked peroxide blonde hair and sneering visage.
